The formation of a cavity, also known as dental caries, is a very basic process.
- First, plaque forms on teeth by the absorption of salivary glycoproteins.
- Secondly, bacteria selectively appear on the plaque surface.
- Thirdly, bacteria grow and mature in the dental plaque. Once this happens, they begin to produce an acid. This acid changes the pH of the environment, resulting in a cavity or hole to form in a tooth. Once this occurs, the protective layer of tooth structure is compromised, allowing for higher levels of plaque and bacteria to flourish. A cavity will continue to enlarge until it is completely removed and replaced with a restoration.
