Teeth Fillings
Tooth-colored Fillings
Many people have silver (amalgam) fillings in their mouth, placed several
years ago. If taken care of, these restorations can be worry-free for many
years. However, these restorations are not always pleasing to the eye.
Over time, the silver fillings have a tendency to go through a corrosive
process, leading either to a metallic taste or gaps and leakage around
the fillings. Also, we know that by design, retention of these restorations
depends solely on the size and depth of the filling. This weakens the tooth,
leading to fracture and breakage of tooth structure.
The composite (tooth-colored) fillings are not only beautiful, but also
add strength to a weakened tooth. These restorations are aesthetically
pleasing and very strong, thanks to new bonding technology.
Advantages to Composite Restorations
There are several advantages to composite, resin, restorations. Resin
fillings are bonded to the teeth creating a versatile, superior fit to
natural tooth structure. These restorations can be used in instances where
much of the tooth structure has been lost. The tooth remains intact for
a longer period of time and stronger.
Since the resin used in tooth colored restorations may contain fluoride,
this can help prevent the recurrence of decay. The resin wears similar
to natural teeth and does not always require placement at the gum line,
which is healthier for the gums.
Due to the bonding properties of the composite filling, a dentist can
be more conservative in tooth preparation. Unlike silver fillings, which
depend on a certain size and depth to successfully retain in a tooth, tooth-colored
fillings bond to the enamel of teeth. This allows the dentist to be more
conservative, and only remove the necessary, diseased tooth structure.
