Dental Crowns and Bridges

For people who experience highly damaged, cracked, or misaligned teeth, crowns are an excellent solution. A crown is custom fitted over a tooth, like a “cap,” to repair these dental problems. The fit of a crown is specific to create a nice seal with existing tooth structure and prevent the impaction of food in the adjacent areas. The support of a crown can greatly reduce pain associated with damaged teeth and help prevent further damage to the area. Functionally, crowns can improve your smile because they prevent further decay, chipping, or other damage from occurring. Aesthetically, a crown can look like a natural tooth, and shade matches can be chosen to make crowns blend in naturally with the surrounding teeth and gums.

The purpose of a bridge is to replace one or more missing teeth and look and function naturally. A bridge utilizes adjacent teeth or implants, as anchors on each side of the space created by a missing tooth, and splints them together so they are permanently fixed in the mouth. When a lost tooth is replaced with bridgework, the teeth on either side are prepared as crowns to serve as anchors, called abutments, for the bridge. The replacement teeth, called pontics, are made to appear as if they are emerging out of the gum. Bridges, and many crowns, are most often made from ceramic tooth colored porcelain on the outside, fused to gold alloy underneath.
